A song for Easter. The English hymn, "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross", represents quite a breakthrough in hymn-writing. Before it was written, church songs tended to be merely metered renditions of the Psalms intoned by a cantor and then repeated by the congregation. Isaac Watts (1674-1748) wrote these lyrics as a young man and went on to write some 750 hymns, many of which are still used in church services today. He is justly known as "the father of English hymnody." "When I Survey" was first published in "Hymns and Spiritual Songs" in 1707. There are several tunes associated with this hymn, but the one used by the Hong Kong Welsh Male Voice Choir is "Morte Christe", the Welsh setting by Emrys Jones. Although we have the Welsh translation of this song, we only sing the English lyrics, at least for the relatively short time I have been a member of the choir. My attempt at a solo rendition is based on the first tenor part I sing in the choir, but in a more comfortable key. Note: I have been asked if the HK Welsh Male Voice Choir is a religious choir. Only if rugby counts as a religion! No more songs for a while. I will be taking a break for Easter week (travelling to Mindanao in the Philippines). Back to a song a day when I return.

Merddyn Emrys(Ffestiniog Railway Double Fairlie steam locomotive)enters stage right underneath Rosllyn Bridge and works his way through Dduallt Station, disappearing around the Spiral for a tantalising moment before emerging to raise the echoes through the Vale of Ffestiniog. He powers majestically past the camera at Barn Cutting... There are few finer sights!

This is my video response to Emrys, who asked me to specify what sort of grants I would put in place to bolster green technology development in Canada. In this video, I highlight the Networks of Centres of Excellence program. Under my platform, I would budget for a new network, specifically for the development of green technology. Such a network would bring together researchers from different fields - engineering, chemistry, biology, etc - working together to develop beneficial environmental technologies.
