Sweet Old World - Emmylou Harris For JL: Thanks for suggesting this Song. Lyrics: Sweet Old World by Emmylou Harris See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world The breath from your own lips, the touch of fingertips A sweet and tender kiss The sound of a midnight train, wearing someone's ring Someone calling your name Somebody so warm cradled in your arm Didn't you think you were worth anything See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world Millions of us in love, promises made good Your own flesh and blood Looking for some truth, dancing with no shoes The beat, the rhythm, the blues The pounding of your heart's drum together with another one Didn't you think anyone loved you See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world See what you lost when you left this world, this sweet old world Biography Emmylou Harris was born on April 2nd, 1947 in Birmingham, Alabama. Her family moved several times after her birth and finally settled in the suburbs of Washington D.C. College was not appealing to Harris and she dropped out to pursue a career in music, singing at folk clubs in Greenwich Village. Success and Loss in First Years After making an album that went under everyone's radar, Harris was introduced to a young, talented singer named Gram Parsons. He was looking for a female singer and Harris was the perfect fit -- they went to Los Angeles to start recording. They had a passionate relationship and bonded musically as well, producing two albums; GP and Grievous Angel. It all came crashing down, however, after Gram Parsons died of a drug overdose. Filled with grief, Harris filled her first three solo albums with tributes (both direct and indirect) to Parsons. She worked with Parsons' talented Hot Band, and consequently, audiences couldn't get enough of Pieces of the Sky, Elite Hotel and Luxury Liner. The Grammy panel also recognized her efforts with awards for the singles "Elite Hotel" in 1976, and "Blue Kentucky Girl" in 1979. Grammy Girl Became Country Queen Harris became a true country phenom after releasing Roses in the Snow in 1980. The work was hailed as an amazing feat and she returned to the Grammys to take home another award, this time for her collaboration with Roy Orbison for the single "That Lovin' You Feelin' Again." Though she produced eight albums in the next seven years, her next great accomplishment came in 1987, when she teamed up with Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton. These all-stars produced Trio, the Academy of Country Music Album of the Year and the recipient of the Grammy for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group. This signaled a change in style for Harris, who, with time, had begun to alter her sound and experiment more. '90s Brought Change, More Sales The album Bluebird in 1989 showed hints of a changing country style, and Harris continued the change in the early '90s with the Grammy-winning At the Ryman with the Nash Ramblers. She was inducted into the Grand Ol' Opry in 1992, and then recruited Daniel Lanois to help cultivate her new sound even further. Lanois is a highly talented producer whose work with U2 was well known at the time. He maintained his reputation by helping Harris create one of the most significant albums of the '90s in Wrecking Ball (1995). Themes of sexuality and despair were reflected in her raspy yet honey-sweet voice. That year, she was honored with the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Career Recognized as Legendary In 1999, Harris, now thrice-divorced and independent as ever, received the Billboard Century Award, which recognized her stellar career. They should have waited a year to present it to her, however, as Harris showed she was not finished producing hits after she received another Grammy for the album Red Dirt Girl in 2000. The American Music Awards had the right timing, giving her a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. Amazingly, Harris continues to produce albums. After collaborations on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack and the release of Stumble into Grace, her album tally nears 30. She has produced handfuls of platinum tracks, received 11 Grammys and is arguably the last true country diva. Without a doubt, she is a living legend. Sweet Old World - Emmylou Harris

This is Harris' third release on Nonesuch and her first solo effort since 2003's Stumble Into Grace. Of the selected material, Harris explains, "I've always seen myself as a relentless songfinder, a singer of other people's work whom I admire greatly, and an occasional songwriter." A North American summer tour in support of the record begins May 23 in California with more dates to be announced shortly. Recorded over a four-year span primarily at producer Brian Ahern's Easter Island Surround in Nashville, for the first time in 25 years, this album returns Harris to the producer she worked with for her first 11 albums. Taking its title from a line in the featured Harris-John Starling duet "Old Five and Dimers Like Me" (Billy Joe Shaver), the record includes both original material as well as some of Harris' favorite songs. As Fader magazine notes, "Harris' records are distinguished by an almost curatorial respect for the artifacts..." Longtime friends Kate and Anna McGarrigle co-wrote and sing on two tracks, "How She Could Sing the Wildwood Flower" and "Sailing Round the Room," while Dolly Parton, Vince Gill and Buddy Miller also contribute vocals on the album. A twelve-time Grammy winner and Billboard Century Award recipient, Emmylou Harris' contribution as a singer and songwriter spans 40 years. She has recorded more than 25 albums and has lent her talents to countless fellow artists' recordings. In recognition of her remarkable career, Harris will be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on April 27. Of Harris, Tammy Genovese, CMA Chief Executive Officer says, "(Emmylou) possesses the voice of an angel. She is one of the most revered song interpreters on the planet, and has been instrumental in preserving country music's past while expanding country music's horizons throughout her career." New York's WFUV also honors Harris this spring, recognizing the singer with the Sound and Vision Award at its annual spring gala at Sotheby's on April 29.

Artist: Trio Song: After The Gold Rush Album: Trio II - Dolly Parton/Emmylou Harris/Linda Ronstadt "After The Goldrush" - released in April 1999 was shot in an old synagogue in New York. It reached #9 on the CMT Top Twelve Countdown. * I DON'T OWN THIS VIDEO Well i dreamed i saw the knights in armor coming Saying something about a king There were peasants singing and drummers drumming And the archer split the tree There was a fanfare blowing to the sun That was floating on the breeze Look at mother nature on the run In the twenty-first century Look at mother nature on the run In the twenty-first century I was lying in a burned out basement With the full moon in my eyes I was hoping for replacement When the sun burst through the sky There was a band playing in my head And i felt like i could cry I was thinking about what a friend had said I was hoping it was a lie Thinking about what a friend had said I was hoping it was a lie Well i dreamed i saw the silver spaceships flyin' In the yellow haze of the sun There was laughing, crying and colors flying All around the chosen one All in a dream, all in a dream, the loading had begun Flying mother nature's silver seed to a new home in the sun They were flying mother nature's silver seed to a new home... Dolly Parton :"I loved that song from the day I heard it on Neil's record. Then that girl a cappella group, Prelude, came out with it. And I loved it then, and I just remember thinking all of the things I thought it meant-the song was so visual. And I thought, 'What does that song mean?' I just thought it meant everything...And I thought, well, I'll interpret it like the Second Coming, or an invasion of the aliens, or whatever. And so when I took the song to the Trio project — me, Linda [Ronstadt] and Emmylou [Harris] — and it was one of the songs... we all took our own suggestions and batch of songs. They both knew the song and had worked with Neil. So we did cut it, although that Trio album's never going to come out because it died on the vine. But we did cut the whole album, and then Linda put "Goldrush" in her album right after that, which didn't do anything. But I just still felt so strong about the song. And so, anyway, when we were doing the Trio album, I asked Linda and Emmy what it meant, and they didn't know. So we called Neil Young, and he didn't know. We asked him, flat out, what it meant, and he said, 'Hell, I don't know. I just wrote it. It just depends on what I was taking at the time. I guess every verse has something different I'd taken.' So when I did it, I thought, well, if Neil can't interpret it, then I'm just going to make it my own. So in this version, I put it in the 21st century. When I said 'something about a king' instead of 'something about a queen,' I thought that could be Jesus and the Second Coming. And then, at the end, when I talk about the space people, I was thinking that the Mayans always said they'd be coming back in 2011, so I thought, well, the 21st century, that's when something is going to happen. So I thought, well, I'd put it over in the 21st century. I don't know. What do you think the song's about?" I confess that as much as I loved "After The Goldrush," I'd never even thought about the Mayans. "Well, I do," Dolly starts right back, "because I'm a writer, and I just kept trying to think about what Neil meant. I just loved the song. But when I first heard it, you know, when he says, 'I was lying in a burned-out basement,' I just saw the Second World War. I just saw buildings and burned-out cities — I saw every kind of thing, and I thought, 'What does the song mean?' I guess it was the acid." [©Dollyon-line.com]
